Gynecology and COVID19: What You Should Know

Even as the quarantine and lockdown restrictions ease up, you may have concerns about moving forward in uncertain times. Specifically, how does coronavirus and the disease it causes – COVID-19 – affect your gynecologic care?

Here at Lady’s Care Center, Dr. Ladynez Espinal and our entire team are dedicated to providing safe and compassionate women’s health care. We’re still here to serve you even as the world continues to face this unparalleled challenge.

Here’s what we know about gynecology and COVID-19

The novel coronavirus is still so new, researchers are working hard to learn as much as possible about this new virus. During the earliest stages of the pandemic, elective procedures were initially put on hold. Now, practices are opening back up and scheduling elective procedures once again.

Even though “elective procedures” sounds like it’s an optional treatment, many elective procedures can dramatically improve the quality of your life. The ACOG issued a statement encouraging women in need of gynecologic care (such as surgery to remove painful fibroids) to seek it, even during the pandemic.

No matter what type of appointment you need – whether it’s to receive an IV to boost your metabolism or an exam to talk about incontinence – we’re dedicated to your health and safety. In the next section, we’ll explore what we’re doing to address concerns about COVID-19 transmission.

How we’re handing our gynecological appointments

Even though we’ve re-opened our Miramar, Florida office, we know that things are still not back to the “normal” that we used to know. Following the guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the ACOG, we’re taking extra precautions to make sure that you receive the gynecologic care you need without compromising your health or the health of our team. Here’s a quick peak to highlight what we’re doing to keep you safe:

In addition, we are also offering telehealth for certain types of appointments. The ACOG developed key opinions and suggestions regarding telehealth appointments for gynecology in conjunction with the President’s Task Force. When applicable, telehealth visits can provide quality care and an opportunity to speak one-on-one with Dr. Espinal – without ever having to leave your home.

What to do if you contract COVID-19

If you test positive for COVID-19, the CDC suggests that you shelter in place and try to avoid contact with others. However, if you experience severe symptoms – difficulty breathing – call 9-1-1, let them know you are positive for COVID-19, and keep your mask on (to protect the emergency medical technicians).

What to do if you have COVID-19 and need gynecologic care

In order to reduce the transmission of the disease to other patients in our office as well as our team, we ask that you stay home if you are sick. If you’re already scheduled for a visit, please call first before arriving – we may suggest rescheduling or even converting to a telehealth visit.

Staying informed

At Lady’s Care Center, we are firm believers in the power of knowledge. To stay up-to-date on the latest developments, please refer to CDC for news regarding testing opportunities, symptoms of COVID-19, and news about vaccination development.
